On spatial extremes: with application to a rainfall problem
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider daily rainfall observations at 32 stations in the province of North Holland (The Netherlands) during 30 years. Let Q be the total rainfall in this area on one day. An important question is: what is the amount of rainfall Q that is exceeded once in 100 years? This is clearly a problem belonging to extreme value theory. Also it is a genuinely spatial problem. Recently, a theory of extremes of continuous stochastic processes has been developed. Using the ideas of that theory and much computer power (simulations) we have been able to come up with a reasonable answer to the question above.

Statistical Modeling of Spatial Extremes
The areal modeling of the extremes of a natural process such as rainfall or temperature is important in environmental statistics; for example, understanding extreme areal rainfall is crucial in flood protection. This article reviews recent progress in the statistical modeling of spatial extremes, starting with sketches of the necessary elements of extreme value statistics and geostatistics. The...
متن کاملIndian Summer Monsoon Rainfall: Implications of Contrasting Trends in the Spatial Variability of Means and Extremes
India's agricultural output, economy, and societal well-being are strappingly dependent on the stability of summer monsoon rainfall, its variability and extremes. Spatial aggregate of intensity and frequency of extreme rainfall events over Central India are significantly increasing, while at local scale they are spatially non-uniform with increasing spatial variability. The reasons behind such ...
متن کاملTitre: Copules des valeurs extrêmes et processus max-stables
Abstract: During the last decades, copulas have been increasingly used to model the dependence across several random variables such as the joint modelling of the intensity and the duration of rainfall storms. When the problem consists in modelling extreme values, i.e., only the tails of the distribution, the extreme value theory tells us that one should consider max-stable distributions and put...
متن کاملSurface runoff estimation in an upper watershed using geo-spatial based soil conservation service-curve number method
Runoff assessment and estimation is crucial for watershed management as it provides information that is needed to expedite the course of watershed planning and development. The most commonly used model due to its simplicity and versatility in runoff estimation is the soil conservation service curve number developed by the United States Department of Agriculture. The study estimates the surface ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Station Density and Regional Division on Spatial Distribution of Daily Rainfall
Rainfall is one of the most important climatic variables in the hydrology cycle. In flood estimation as well as environmental pollution studies in medium to large watersheds not only mus temporal pattern of rainfall t be known, but also the knowledge of its spatial distribution is required. Estimation of daily rainfall distribution without comparison and selection of suitable methods may lead...
